Awareness

Reuse, repair, donate — and recycle responsibly.

Why e-waste matters

E-Waste, whether electronic, household, or industrial, is growing rapidly across Mauritius. When items are discarded improperly, they contribute to pollution, landfill overflow, and environmental damage. ERecover.mu encourages a more sustainable approach:

Electronics can contain substances such as lead, mercury, cadmium and lithium. When devices are burned, dumped or thrown in household bins, these materials can leak into soil and water, while valuable metals are lost.

Before you give away a device

  • Back up and wipe your data — sign out of accounts and do a factory reset on phones, tablets and laptops.
  • Remove SIM and memory cards.
  • Take batteries out where possible and never put damaged or swollen batteries in the bin.
  • Keep chargers and accessories together — they make items far more reusable.

The better order of choices

  1. Reuse — if it works, someone can use it.
  2. Repair — many “dead” devices only need a battery, a screen or a cable.
  3. Donate — NGOs, schools and families can benefit.
  4. Recycle responsibly — only as the last step, through proper collectors.

Never

  • Burn cables or circuit boards to recover copper.
  • Break open CRT screens, fluorescent tubes or batteries at home.
  • Leave electronics in the rain or in open dumps.
